Street Ministry Guidance

Street witnessing guidance

God’s part and our part

  • The Holy Spirit is convicting the world of sin, righteous, and judgement (John 16:8). Speaking as someone experiencing the manifested presence of the Holy Spirt at all times, I know we are only participating with what the Spirit is doing in the world. Understanding this truth does a couple of things. It keeps us from falling into pride by believing we are too important and helps us remain humble so the Holy Spirit can continue to use us. Remember, he resist the proud but gives grace to the humble (Jam 4:6).

God commands us to witness

  • Go into the highways, byways and compel them to come for he promises to be with us (Luke 14:23, Heb 13:5). We have a direct mandate from the king who promises he is always with us. We have authority over principalities and powers as the Holy Spirit is always in us. I have always believed this truth even before I began to experience his presence.

God warns us to use wisdom

  • I send you out as sheep among wolves, therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves (Mat 10:16). Make sure to exercise wisdom when approaching anyone, always seeking the Spirit’s guidance. Approach people in humility and kindness, looking for cues to continue or back off. Remember to continually pray asking for wisdom during your outreach. Baptize your outreach in prayer!

God expects us to represent him properly

  • We have one agenda, whether feeding, praying for healing, giving a tract, or leading to Christ, our agenda is to display God’s love (1 Cor 13:4). Now, that does not mean God’s love is not going to sting those practicing sin. However, the love of God caused him to give us his Son and the Holy Spirit so we will not perish. Therefore, if we are not motivated by this type of love, don’t go out until your attitude is right! We must cultivate a deep love to see people make it to glory. We want to become extremely appealing to those hurting and don’t know our Lord. Remember, it’s not about winning a point while discussing something but about that soul becoming convicted of sin. Therefore, know when to focus more on God’s obedience or law and when to lean more into his compassion or grace. Souls already broken over their sin need more of a tender, compassionate approach. Souls trying to justify their sin and resisting the truth of Scripture, need more law and judgment (Jude 22-23).

Our works are significant, but not the ultimate motivator

  • Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear for the day will declare it (1 Cor 3:12). When our Lord returns fire will reveal each one’s work and motivation behind it. If our works endure his testing, we will receive a reward, but if not they will be burned up. Therefore, we must have the proper motivation. No doubt, we are motivated by rewards but more motivated to simply obey the Lord’s command to reach the lost soul.

Our authority comes from the Son of God

  • He sent them out 2:2 to heal the sick, preach the good news and gave them power over unclean spirits (Luke 10:1). The week before my out reach, I always pray to have the Spirit give me an increase in power and compassion. We never know when the Spirit will use us to physically heal someone or lead them to the Lord. In my experience, instant physical healing and confessions of sin increase our faith.

Our authority comes from relationship

  • Without the life of the tree, the branch cannot produce fruit. Similarly the Lord says if you do not abide in him, you can do nothing (John 15:4). We must be in the Word, prayer and sometimes fasting leading up to our outreach. Trust me my friends, this will have a significant impact on how we experience the outreach.

Our zeal to reach the lost overcomes any fear

  • God has not given us a Spirit of fear but love, peace and a sound mind (2 Tim 1:7, Rev 21:8). This should be our approach to all relationships because we are children of God with authority. Our Lord does not want us to be afraid to approach someone when we do so with nothing but love in our hearts. With love, we are not afraid of rejection and our feelings are not easily hurt.

God took the first step to redeem his creation

  • For God so loved the world that he gave is only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Everyone matters to God so we wear our wristband with pride understanding Jesus is the Son of God. We cannot see race, social status, sex, sexual orientation, physical appearances, etc., see people from God’s perspective, lost or saved.

God has given one path to eternal life

  • No other foundation is laid but Christ, one plants, one waters but God gives the increase (1 Cor 3:7-11). What we are doing is vital but God ultimately gets the glory because we cannot save anyone. However, on the streets you will encounter powerful false teaching claiming to be the way to God. Therefore, we must know our Bible. After discussing the truth of Scripture with someone for a few minutes, there is no need to continue if they disagree with us. At times, we must simply agree to disagree.

God tells us our soul will be tested and tempted

  • In this world you will have tribulation but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world (John 16:33). We understand that we live in a fallen world, however our Lord wants us to experience joy, because we will not lead many people to the Lord by exhibiting fear or sadness. In the midst of difficult times, we must cultivate genuine joy for ourself and love for mankind.

Our conviction of a soul’s destination compels us

  • He will say to those on the right hand, come you blessed of my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world (Mat 25:34). Then he will say to those on the left hand, depart from me you cursed into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Mat 25:41). We must become convinced that eternal happiness or eternal sadness awaits every soul. Evangelize!

Winning with Your Body, Mind and Soul, Going All In

Henry Arnold Davis has written another great resource for tackling this life and preparing for the next. This great work, “Winning With Your Body, Mind, and Soul” encourages the reader to live in such a way that he will win the war. To win the war means the part of us that lives beyond this physical world, our soul/spirit/consciousness, will receive the best outcome. Henry provides great insight to the reader on how he is winning the war. This 2nd book is a natural sequel to his 1st work.

Gambling with Your Soul

Henry’s 1st great work, “Gambling With Your Soul” answers the question, what will happen to me when I die? This book addresses what happens to the part of us that is not physical, the soul/spirit/consciousness upon death. I have used this book during my outreach, provided a copy for most of my neighbors as well as others. The approach my brother takes to answering this question is unique because he establishes that first of all, no one knows.

We only have the present

Initially, this was difficult for me to accept because I am experiencing the physical presence of God through the Holy Spirit moment by moment. However, when I discussed this more with Henry, I had to admit that I too, do not know what will happen to a soul/spirit/consciousness after death. Just because I am experiencing his presence now does not mean I will experience it when my spirit leaves my body or upon physical death. Paul said, he was convinced that nothing can separate us from the love of God, including death. However, when he wrote that, he believed rather than knew that. Because Paul says why does someone hope for or believe for, what he already has. These books can be purchased through Amazon and available through major retailers.

Guidance when serving the poor

Our Lord said we will always have the poor (Mat 26:11). Therefore, do not think that you are going to somehow alleviate poverty. After working with the homeless for over 20 years, I have discovered there are a number of reasons why an individual is in this plight. Some have income, but not enough to sustain themselves. Some have been homeless for a few months, while others could have been on the streets for over 10 years. Some are veterans and struggling with PTSD. Some have addictions that have caused them to loose jobs, families and all financial security. Some actually do not want to come off the streets. In fact, the fear of living among society is scary to them.

When you think about it my friends, if not for the grace of God in our lives, many of us could have experienced homelessness. I recall as a young child, that on many occasions our local grocery store manager would allow my mom to fill up two grocery baskets and just pay when the government assistance came in. Upon receiving the government checks, I remember my mom saying Marvin, please go give this to the store manager. Without this level of trust and generosity from the store manager, I am unsure what would have happened to my family. Now, after serving the homeless for some years, the Lord gave me the idea to write down some of their concerns and pray for anyone hitting my list for at least 30 days. These are the guidelines I followed during my monthly outreaches.

Your clothing

  • Always wear something visible that says you are about God. For instance, I wore my John 3:16 shirts, hoodie and wristbands, which say everyone matters. The reason is when you approach them, they know what you are about. Now, if that person has a strong disdain for religion or God, the person will give off signs. Then you will know whether to proceed or not.

Your demeanor

  • Do not appear sad when you approach the homeless. If you have to cry, do it if they are sharing something intimate with you. When considering God has created man in his image to rule and have authority, it is difficult to see the condition some people are in. Please have a pleasant look or smile on your face, remember we have the joy of the Lord!

Initial contact with the homeless

  • As you approach, notice if they have an animal. If the animal appears aggresive, you can just leave some items and say please help yourself. If you are able to approach them, you can say something like good afternoon my friend, we are serving lunches and have some clothing, would you like some? If they say yes, you begin to serve them and I would ask for their name at this point? If the conversation continues, you can ask them to give you something they would like to see happen over the next 30 days? I typically make a joke and say, do not ask God to make pink elephants fly or establish world peace! If you feel lead, you can share something God is doing in your life? However, be careful not to turn the focus of the discussion on you!

Continuing dialogue with homeless

  • At this point, I typically ask them do they know the Lord? Then I ask them are they living for the Lord? This statement will probably bring sadness to their face, so if you can, try and touch them. If the conversation continues, you can give them some literature or if you have any, my everyone matters John 3:16 wristband. For those in this condition, seeing John 3:16 on your wrist everyday is powerful! However, do not force a conversation, some people might want a sandwich and resources, but do not want to or are even able to, share intimate things with a stranger. Nevertheless, you will have some powerful interactions. I recall meeting a person on the way to commit suicide who told me after our exchange, with tears, he was going to give life another chance. At times, I would ask the homeless if they have visited shelters, tried rehab or other programs? My friends, many people we meet in this ministry do not have a lot of fight left. However, even if we can just give a little hope, we did good.

Patience

  • Each interaction is different. Some might be a few seconds or minutes, while others might last considerably longer. If the conversation is lasting to long, you can politely say, my friend I must go and serve others today (Luke 4:43). However, be sensitive to the person and where they are in life. Some homeless people are extremely lonely and just want to talk.

Personal space

  • Do not be afraid to come near or even touch the homeless. I recall a simple hug brought tears to a guy eyes. He said, sir no one has touched me like that in quite a while. However, do not force physical touch or even prayer if you detect the person does not want this. Some people have had deep negative experiences with the church and blame God. If the person wants to yell and blame God, then try to take it, provided they do not become physical. Remember, they are not angry at you because they do not even know you. I recall in one instance, a guy came close and was yelling profanity about the Lord for quite a while. I felt the need to just stand there and let him speak. Afterwards, the guy begin to cry and I was able to serve him, gave him a hug and put him on my prayer list. Another guy standing by saw the incident, came up to me and said sir you are the real deal.

Your contact information

  • Do not be afraid to offer the homeless your contact information. If you do not want to give them your phone number, try and give them an email address. Even if they do not use it, this says they mattered enough to you to desire future contact.

Giving the homeless rides

  • Be careful about letting someone in your vehicle. I recall on several occasions how this went down. In one instance, my wife and I gave a young man a ride from Folsom to El Dorado hills. It was a pleasant exchange and we were able to pray before he left the vehicle. However, I recall on one exchange in Del Paso Heights, where I was serving with a man and we gave a young lady a ride. After a few blocks, she begin to scream and say stop touching me that hurts! We quickly pulled over and she jumped out of the car! I recall on one exchange under the X Street overpass where a young lady entered my vehicle. I was serving with a man that day. The young lady was hinting that she could take care of us for a few dollars. We gave her a few dollars and said to her, God does not want you to continue to sell your body. So, please be lead by the Holy Spirit before you let someone in your vehicle. Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves, therefore be wise as serpents but harmless as doves (Mat 10:16).

Your follow up

  • Have your phone or tablet available to record their name, location and prayers requested. I remember being able to get some housing for a number of people. Try not to make promises to the homeless you cannot keep. See to it that you pray for their request the length of time you told them. If you told them you were going to try and look into their situation, please do so. If they gave you a way to contact them, periodically, try to check in with them. Remember to thank God throughout your outreach.

Your companion

  • I tried to go with a partner, but many times it was just me and the Holy Spirit. Do not be afraid to go by yourself. I remember on some of my outings where I was alone, I felt the strong presence of the Holy Spirit in that car.

Food items

  • This depends on how long or how many people you want to serve. Typically, I carried 50 – 75 brown bag lunches filled with these types of items: Ham and cheese sandwiches in zip lock bags with mustard and mayonnaise condiments, fruit snacks, real fruit, chips, sweets, Gatorade, energy drinks and lots of bottled water. I remember leaving cases of bottled waters at certain parks and asking the homeless to help themselves and make sure they share with each other.

Clothing & other items

  • Large and extra large sweat shirts and pants, socks, blankets, sock hats, gloves, sleeping bags, rain coats, mouth wash, nail clippers, hand sanitizer, small Bibles, religious tracts, everyone matters John 3:16 wristbands, resource cards from local homeless shelters, etc.

Sacramento area locations

  • Florin & 24th recycling center, 24th public parks, Florin Home Depo parking lot, Stockton Blvd and surrounding streets, G Parkway area, Fruitridge & 47th, Arden and El Camino area, Arden & Del Paso Heights recycling center & light rail station, 65th & Broadway light rail station, Broadway river access, under X Street freeway overpasses & Downtown areas, Richards Blvd, Caesar Chavez & other downtown parks, Garden Highway river locations in Natomas, around fast food places, especially In & Out burger on Madison, behind abandoned buildings, at large intersections.

Outreach times

  • When I was going out on a regular basis, I went out the last Saturday of the month. This schedule is still followed by the group of guys I went out with. However, I always carry tracts, resource cards and wristbands in my vehicle. Also, when I visit fast food establishments or grocery stores, I look to see if someone is hanging out asking for a meal. You can just buy them a meal and if possible, sit and learn a little of their story. If you are able, try to serve at the same time and locations for a while. Let the homeless know you plan on working this area around the same time next month and ask them to spread the word. Also, this approach allows you to see if God is moving through your prayers for a person. I remember after working the Florin area for about 5 years, people would gather each month to see me.
